Re: I Saw One

FYI - BIG difference between a "Real" 427 Cobra and an "Original" 427 Cobra. Shelby still makes 427 Cobras - take a look at http://www.shelbyautos.com

The Shelby series 4000 cars that Shelby builds today are considered "Real" Shelby Cobras, but they aren't rare and weren't built in the 60s. So just because you see one with a license plate that says "Real", doesn't mean it's an original 60's Cobra.

As for telling the difference between an original and a replica, there are some that the only way you can tell is by the serial #. The Shelby 4000 series cars and the Cobra replicas built by http://<a rel="nofollow" href="http:...m/home.cfm</a> are pretty much exact replicas of the originals, with some improvements.

I've gone to several Shelby American Automotive Club (SAAC) shows, and I have seen several original 289 streetcars, but I have never actually seen an original 427 Cobra (street or S/C).

Talking

Gee Scott
Your ears must have had a lot of practice to tell a 1960's carbed 427 sideoilder from a new(rebuilt) one in a kit. Or would that be a 428 or 429, all used today and in originals. Ooops, don't forget the lil ol 289 and it's distictive sound.

Maybe you were thinking of this instead:

o and btw a magnet doesn't work on aluminum, even if you assume the position.....sigh

Re: I Saw One

Theres a guy round the corner that has built a replica, yellow with black strips, and a guy down the road that has almost finished his own replica.

I'll have to go and have a chat sometime and plan on making my own.

Re: I Saw One

Watch, i'm about to talk out of my arse..

First of all, get one of those computer designed frames you were talking about, into it put an injected, balanced, alloy, 429, use all lightweight materials internals, DOHC, 4 valves a cylinder, high flow, big lift valves, strap 2 superchargers to it (belt drive, not the vortech kind), put on open exhausts that go out the sides (the only way to have cobra exhausts) and connect it to a Hollinger 6 speed, with a 3.5:1 diff (ford 9 inch), get the alluminium fibre body (like on the 4000 series from shelbyautos.com), give it 13 inch brakes with 4-spots on the front and 12 with 2-spots on the rear, put on 15 inch minilites with 23x10x15 inch rubber on the front and 25x11x15 inch on the back (check out ian geoghean's super falcon in the ford-falcons section of this website, those are real tyres.), then get the guards flared.. because those tyres are frigging HUGE, give it grey carpet interior, seats from the 2002 mustang cobra, and gauges of some description.

Now you've read that and will say "that doesnt make sense!" or "that wont work" remember that i'm 15, know fuck all about cars, but i'm sure you understand that all i want is to get a HUGE engine, hot it up to the max, then stick it in a cobra and let it rip. Lets see me try and get those horses to stick to the ground. >

(also, cobras of any description are very rare in australia, i've seen 2 in 15 years and i can bet my last dollar that they were fakes, any cobra over here achieves U.L.S.(urban legend status))

Big engine + Small car + Crazy Driver = Urban Legend Status.

Re: I Saw One

In Reply To Post #5, The Originals Did Have Aluminum Bodies, But There Are Also Replica Bodies Made Of Aluminum Too, All The Way Down To The Chassis, So It May Still Be Fake.

I don't care if they are real or fake, they are beautiful fast cars. Even the new ones Ford released. My dad builds kit cobras and I love to go along for the test drive. I've seen real ones behind glass, but never on the road. I've seen people who think they own a real one, and watched them cry as my dad disproves it. Real or not, i love Cobras.

Re: I Saw One

I would guess if you saw it on the road, it would be a replica. Shelby made less than a thousand total cars. Many did not survive, leaving only hundreds.

In my life (I'm 46), I have only seen 6.
  • Two were at the Portland Historic Races in 2006.
  • One was at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas in 2007.
  • Three at the Shelby American Factory in Las Vegas in 2004.
That's it. I have never seen one on the road. I know they exist, but if you're lucky enough to have seen a "real" one, you're a lucky guy.
