92 Roadmaster Alternator

I have Volts idiot light that just came on coupled with a reading of about 10 volts on the gauge. The battery is new and of course the car still starts and runs. When I put a voltmeter on the battery I get a reading of 12.2 volts. I can take to my local AutoZone and have them test it but am leary that they will say the alternator is bad no matter what. Is there a voltage regulator on these cars, as in the old days or are there any other conditions that I should be looking at. If it is the alternator, it seems relatively easy to get to and change other than I cannot see how to loosen the serpentine belt, which seems prudent to change when (if) I do the alternator. The car is used a 4th vehicle, I want to fix without spending a fortune, or replacing 5 different items to find the one that's bad. Any past experience or input on this is greatly appreciated.
