Re: 90 240sx turbo

Read the OP's original post.

He's not looking to build the best motor to 30psi, not by a long stretch. The fact that you have 10 years as a mechanic and have built all those motors (even a CA?!?!?) doesnt change the fact that your statement is wrong.

This is the stupidest stereotype statement you could make. There are a lot of SOHC turbo cars out there making good power, and when you blow a motor its only $50 bucks to replace it. For him to buy and install a dual cam would cost a few hundred bucks, which could buy and tune through five single cams.

People give single cams away, and they people make good power for cheap on them all day. Its the ultimate motor to learn on, its almost free when you blow it, and parts can be had for cheap all the time.

If I wanted to start off a DIY turbo kit and learn through experience, a SOHC would be my first choice, building a motor for 30psi and spending $5k only to blow it a month later would be my last.

Re: 90 240sx turbo

^^^what makes it so different between the sr than? SR has another cam? its not super super reliable, at high psi or hp #'s but for a starter motor, to learn how to build, and how to drive its a fantastic idea.

Re: 90 240sx turbo

What makes it better to learn on?

I wager that a perfectly running stock SR with shocks/springs and some kind of not VLSD LSD is the best setup to learn on ever.

I've driven alot of wack under powered cars and alot of exremely fast hard to drive cars. and thats my honest no bullshit opinion.

why?

1) Power to fix mistakes, makes it funner, nobody likes not being able to do anything with 90 compression KA.
2) SR was meant to be turbo and runs extremely well as such when it wasn't dug out of a junkyard where its been sitting upside down for 15 years
3) Squishy suspension means time to fix mistakes but it makes it not a stock marshmello.
4) very consistant/easy to learn in. everything works the same except slower so you can figure everything out.

I say that Nissan did an E5 blacktop better than this kid will ever get a KA, blah blah you could make this power with a KA blah blah. shit doesn't matter if its not reliable. which the SR is. Gotta pay to play, if you can't afford it go smash pennies on a railroad track. a busty jones KA is more hassel than an SR is worth.

You could run Kia motor and I wouldn't fault someone for using it just to get out and get seat time, but at one point, SR starts saving time and you'll learn faster because bolt on SR deals with 230whp infinately better than a 230whp KA would and you spend less time fixing issues.

Re: 90 240sx turbo

^^^speaks the truth, however you can have a sohc ka-t for cheaper than a sr swap (would i go sohc-t? maybe, maybe not) are sr's good motors, yes of course proven time and time again, i believe sohc-t's are just very underrated, as there has been alot less -T time with them. so of course everyone is going to think its unreliable. if anything (and i mean ANYTHING) is done correctly it can be reliable. (with boundries of course)...sohc turbo your looking at less than 1500 bucks...you cant pick up a sr for anywhere near that (unless were talking junk yard, upside down shit ) but thats my opinion. something breaks, find out what you did wrong and fix it, because most likely it was your doing. thats why its good to learn on (no only driving, but wrench time learning) as most of us have.

i would say 90% of great mechanics come from them doing shit thats never done before and figuring out why it doesnt work, then fixing the issue. thats what being a mechanic is about. and as far as im concerned a car enthusiast. thats why i say go sohc-t...

~Nick

p.s. and you dont have to worry about wiring (not that its hard to wire up an sr )
