Geo Prizm Clutch Slave Cylinder issue

Hello all, and thank you in advance for any insights you may have.

Does anyone know for a fact whether or not the clutch slave cylinder for a 1995 Geo Prizm is located inside the transmission, and if not, whether the transmission would need to be removed to install a new slave cylinder?

My wife and I just spent 850 dollars to have our clutch slave cylinder replaced in our 1995 geo prizm due to air getting in the line. $650 labor, $100 to have the clutch plate machined, and $95 for clutch hydraulic fluid. As it turns out, there was still air getting into the line. The service tech that checked us in said that his mechanic said that sometimes "air gets into the line". Just from my experience in working with bicycle forks and disc brakes, this seemed counterintuitive, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt. We took the car back, and as it turns out, we needed to replace the master cylinder. Also, they charged $95 for clutch fluid, stating this type of fuid is very expensive. Some of my gearhead friends have said that it's just basic DOT fluid and should not have cost so much.

I now have concerns that we've been lied to and overcharged so that's why I'm posting about where the slave cylinder is located, because we may have to file a grievance if it goes that far.

(of note, the service tech seemed to become somewhat defensive when I began to ask probing questions about why the clutch fluid wasn't properly bled the first time)

Thank you so much for any insight you may have.

Kind Regards,

Andy

Re: Geo Prizm Clutch Slave Cylinder issue

slave cylinder is external of the trans(no need to remove trans)
clutch plate (pressure plate)does not get machined its replaced as a unit
clutch,press.plate,& throwout bearing)
something is fishy here
as far as i know clutch fluid is dot3 brake fluid

Re: Geo Prizm Clutch Slave Cylinder issue

Thanks tons inafogg! I checked with a local transmission specialist and they confirmed this as well.

I mis-stated that it was the clutch plate that was sent off to be machined. I think in fact it was the flywheel.

Does this sound like a fairly common occurrence to have to machine the flywheel?

Again, thanks again for the insight.

Cheers,

Andy

Re: Geo Prizm Clutch Slave Cylinder issue

Yes its common to resurface the flywheel when you are replacing the clutch.
i did'nt think they were doing any replacement of the clutch, just the slave cyl
but if they machined the flywheel they also replaced the clutch set up
take a look at your reciept see what parts were replaced.that would make more sense for the labor charged because the trans has to be removed
but if the clutch was not replaced i dont know why they would resurface
the flywheel

Re: Geo Prizm Clutch Slave Cylinder issue

Yes, I'm sorry I didn't mention this. The reason the flywheel machined was because the service tech said they would have to remove the transmission in order to service the slave cylinder and we might as well get the clutch replaced. I've since found out that the slave cylinder is not located inside the transmission, therefore I don't think the transmission needed to be removed in the first place. Can anyone confirm whether or not it would need to be removed?

Thanks,

Andy

No the trans does not need to be removed to replace the slave cylinder
