Key getting stuck

Hi I have a 1994 Chevrolet Camaro V6 and it recently it started getting the key stuck in the ignition in the 'on' position with the car running. I had my mechanics take a look at it, and they were saying I'd have to get a new ignition and key- AND I would also have to get this new key programmed at the dealer for that stupid anti-theft thing. It is one of those keys that has that little black square chip in it.

On a hunch, I suggested that maybe we should just squirt some WD-40 in it. Well they did just that- squired it in and around the key hole maybe? I'm not exactly sure. But anyways it started working a lot better, but made a humming noise from the keyhole for like 2 days, then it stopped.

It works fine for now, but I'm just worried about it getting stuck again in the future. Any thoughts from anyone on this that has also maybe had this problem before?

Thanks!!

Re: Key getting stuck

Their diagnosis was correct. These things just wear. Everytime your key goes in & out, tiny amounts of metal come off the key & the tumblers (inside the cylinder). You may want to go to the locksmith instead. And BTW, these keys aren't programmed. That square chip is the program. It's basically a number from 1-9... that's it. The locksmith will be able to tell you which, and then make the key ... and install the new cylinder. Good luck with everything, and please update us!! Looking forward to hearing from you, now that you're armed with info!

Well so far so good with this!! Keeping my fingers crossed that it's doesn't get stiff again!!! Like I said, we just squirted some WD-40 in and around the key hole and it's working ok for now!

But you gave some GREAT information on the keys- It's good to know that it's a bit more 'simple' programming than what I had originally envisioned. And perhaps it won't be as expensive as I thought IF I have to replace it.

Thanks again!!
