300zx electrical issue
Hopefully someone understands my jibberish. Ok so I have an 85 300zx turbo 5 speed. The alternator is down at the bottom on the engine on the passenger side. On the back of the alternator is a plug, a big nut and a small nut, each nut has its own connection to somewhere up top. The small nut has two black wires that come from somewhere up top and then are held together at the base close to where the nut is. One of these little black wires is broken, right at where they are both held together. I don't know if its a small rubber band or maybe a metal crimper of some kind. It isn't possible to access the other end, the end on the alternator to splice them together. I'm going to guess they will have to be spliced back together. What should I do?

I'm not following you. Any chance you can get a photo of the broken area and post it?
Are you saying the wire is broken where it is crimped on to a ring terminal, and the "rubber band" is maybe some shrink sleeving? -Rod |

Re: 300zx electrical issue
Exactly. Right where the rubber band is that holds the two wires close together it is broken. See the car isn't starting. The gear shoots out but the engine doesn't turn. The starter is brand new and I even had it tested and the gear shoots out and spins. The alternator is new also. I was looking around at it and saw the broken wire. The battery was still connected and when i touched the broken wire to the alternator by accident, it sparked. This may not be why the car won't start but I'm not sure what else to try. The battery terminals are clean.

Camera work is shaky as all hell, but I can't get my camera to take regular pictures anymore. Enjoy.

I think thats where it is broken. If you pause at :36 seconds, you see the terminal/nut, next to the terminal is like a small band or metal strip holding the two wires together. I can't tell if thats one or two wires on yours but mine has two wires leading from that terminal and then split off into their own directions. At that metal strip or band is where its broken. Right dead on. I don't see how one splices this. Where do those two black wires go? Would this one broken wire keep the car from starting? Thats gonna be a pain to splice >.< |

Re: 300zx electrical issue
None of those should keep the starter from working (unless the main battery wire is shorted, in which case you'd have a fire/blown fusible link).
Will your car bump start? |

Re: 300zx electrical issue
I tried to bump start it down the drive way and it didn't work. I may not have had enough speed. My old 91 corolla always bump started down the hill just fine but it was much lighter.

Re: 300zx electrical issue
Does the engine even turn? Are you sure that you don't have a locked up engine?

Re: 300zx electrical issue
It doesn't turn at all and I have been fearing that. How do you figure that out?

Re: 300zx electrical issue
Try to turn it over with a wrench. Big bolt in the middle of the crank pulley. Make sure the transmission is in neutral.

Re: 300zx electrical issue
Ill give that a try, someone else suggested maybe the gear on the fly wheel that meets the starter was stripped.

Re: 300zx electrical issue
The starter would spin fine if the gear was stripped. No load to stop it.

Re: 300zx electrical issue
I haven't spun the engine on a car with a good engine so I don't know if its supposed to turn smoothly the entire time or not. I was able to turn the engine by the crank shaft pulley but its like, smooth for a moment, and then it gets a little harder to turn and then its easy again and then its hard again. I don't hear anything clanking together or making noise. Should it just turn nice and easy the entire time?

Re: 300zx electrical issue
Think about how an engine works. I'm sure you can answer that for yourself .

Re: 300zx electrical issue
Well I know its intake compression power and exhuast are the entire process but I don't know if one is "stronger" or "harder" on the engine than another.
