Is the rust on this car too much
Hello
I'm considering importing a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (Lexus GX) from Japan. The car was manufactured in December 2013 and mileage is only 100 kms. Everything is good about the car, except the fact that it has a little rust under the body due to sitting idle for almost 2 years. I would like to know if the rust is bad enough for me to not buy this car or a little paint would eliminate the problem? Would really appreciate your input. Please look at the attached pictures. Thanks in advance. |

That seems for the most part to be surface rust and not a problem. It's hard to be sure on the small amount of chassis rust.
Not that I'm a perfectionist, but I'd use it as a bargaining chip and see if you can get the price down a little. Doesn't look bad to me. One thing you can do is check is see if this vehicle (in American trim) has any recalls of consequence. There are a few Toyota trucks with chassis rust recalls.

I didn't mention it in the previous post, but what I'd look for are damage to the undercarriage like deep gouges which may not be serious from a functional point of view, but would indicate the vehicle had been taken off-road and need suspension work.

The only areas I saw that concerned me slightly were around the cv joints. Just because the rust on the shafts themselves makes me thinks of the boots getting dry and cracking. If those boots don't stay sealed, dirt and crud gets into the cv joints and ruins the spider gears inside pretty quickly. Trust me, it's a pain in the ass.
Rust is kind of like cancer for cars. You want to catch it early and get rid of it before it spreads and affects vital parts of your car. Like in your case; cv joints and suspension and steering components. Yours really isn't that serious, just clean it up before it becomes a problem and you'll be fine.
