Question Can't Wire Simple Horn Workaround Button. 1993 Caprice

Hi,

I am trying to do something that SHOULD be very simple. Like so many simple things, it's turning out to be a real pain. The car is a 1993 Chevy Caprice. The crappy horn switches in the steering wheel have gone bad and I want to put an external button on the dash. Should be easy, right?

Well, first problem is finding the horn relay. I've heard that it's to the left of the steering column under behind the "convenience panel" (a misnomer if ever I read one). I can't find it there. I try to trace the horn wires from the horn back through the firewall, but they are such a large bundle that it is next to impossible to do. I just want to hook up a simple horn button to get the car past inspection.

Can anyone help?

Re: Can't Wire Simple Horn Workaround Button. 1993 Caprice

your guessing .........

what happens most times is not that horn switch but the horn itself. the horn coil will short out and draw more current when this happens the voltage drop causes erratic horn operation. just did this on a 1994 .

get a scrap yard horn and it should work. also when removing the horn check that the connection is clean. hooking up to the battery the horn may work because there will be little voltage drop. installed using the car wiring the wires are too small to produce the higher current required.

the relays could be in the dash area in the middle some where. listen for clicks with the car off.

those steering wheel switches can be cleaned.

finding the horn switch wire at the steering column BASE would be a way to bypass the wheel switch it it is the problem.
