need opinions on 87 bronco II
gentleman in my town selling a 87 BII w/ 2.9 eng.; 4 speed w/ OD push button 4 wheel drive for $500. needs a front brake line and says it has a sometimes miss in one cylinder. my question is--how dependeble are the 2.9 engines in these? (i learned the hard way about the stinking lousy head gaskets on the 3.8's of the '90's--2 head jobs in 80k miles on my 93 taurus) and how bout the tranny/transfer case? many problems? its in great shape otherwise. thanks in advance for your thoughts! (oh--only 94k miles too)

My 2.9 has never given me any big problems, starts right up every time, even in below zero weather. It ran kinda crappy when i first got it because it had sat virtually unused for almost a year and it didn't want to idle...it would die right away. But since i ran it it hasn't been a problem. Valve cover gaskets are popular for leaks, tho, which isn't nearly as bad as a head and i bought mine leaking, and havn't had time to fix it yet. Plus my water pump just went out about a week ago, but it's nothing special 'cause i have over 131,000 on it. |

Re: need opinions on 87 bronco II
Ive had mine for 20 YEARS and have only replaced the heads, water pump radiator, exhaust parts, brakes, ect... Minor till last month when it will not go into overdrive (still researching and hope to find an answer here on the forum) 165K miles The week link (even if you take proper care) is the trans.
definately have a compression check performed, and check all fluids (including all drive train) properly! But so far I am completly happy with this vechicle (even 4by4ing) Good luck! |
