When do u know when u are over revving??

Hey everybody i have a 98 323is with the six cylinder engine witch i recently had to get replaced because the last motor blew from over revving i know its a low revving motor but just exactly how cafrfull do u have to be about this?? and around what rpms should i be shifting @ to prevent this from happening again because i cant afford another 6500$ engine.

your car is equiped with a tachomiter shift any time befor red line. and dont miss a shift and youl be fine.

Well Did It again tonight just rolling down the road then the rpms just droped to zero. i didnt even put 500 miles on this new engine and have been driving it like a little bitch.almost makes me want to get rid of it and buy a lexus.

I guess i just need more motor power because i am use to high reving motors and i am a little speeed demon.

Do u think the E36 M3 Euro 3.2L would be a good swap or would it just not be worth the money to put it in there??

Any other suggestions on a good type of engine??

Under acceleration you car will not let you over rev it as you describe. If you are forgetting to shift and you go past the read line you will find that everything goes quiet. That's because the motor will cut power to prevent people that cant' drive from wrecking the motor.

When the cut out can't help the car is if you can't shift gears properly when changing down. The turning wheels will force the motor to over rev regardless of spark retardation or what ever.

i think that instead of looking at a 3.2 l motor because you like revving things hard, you should consider an automatic daihatsu charade and practice listening to the motor and seeing if you can predict then the little slush box is about to change. IT sounds like you should get it in a few years.

Had to take a break from the bimmers till i get enough money to keep one on the road seems like they are a bitch to mantian. So i bought a 2002 Jaguar-X type Very nice car for the money...

Dude, b4 you spend money in a Jag, you should learn to drive.... I have a 1985 325e and had a 1969 2002 and a 1979 320i all with over 200k miles on them and all 5spd, never overreved an engine..... If in doubt when you're making a downshift, stand on the clutch and let the gas pedal alone, tap on the brakes until you see the revs come down and then switch gears...... Upshifting is another matter, you like to go fast, so do I, but slowing down is trickie....
