Sorry but yours requires a scan tool/code reader. The good part is it'll likely pay for itself in resetting the DTC's instead of the dealer or shop doing it. One problem is what do you do about some codes? For example you get a P0306...engine misfire on #6 cylinder, now you know #6 is missing but what is causing it to miss? That's where a factory service manual can guide you through some problems. A $300 scan tool and $160 worth of manuals will pay off eventually if you're ready to devote enough time (which is getting shorter every day) to follow a few problems through. |

Re: awd not working
Cool find....you're money ahead.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-...09865700QQrdZ1 This scan tool connects your Bravada to a laptop..Win98 or newer. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Windo...spagenameZWDVW It looks like a better deal than my Autotap because it says it handles all protocols. Hopefully the Pros will step in now with their most valued opinions. |

Re: awd not working
I stand up for the Chilton manuals. If you want to do the brakes, change the spark plugs or fuel/transmission filter, change the wheel bearings or clean the fuel injection..a Chilton book is a great value.
Some folks don't want to do the scan tool thing or fool with the ABS or Air bags and prefer to take their pride and joy to a most cool, trusted and respected professional. |

Re: awd not working
Some chain type auto parts stores will scan your computer for free, just call around.

Re: awd not working
there is a separate computer to run the awd. its under the passenger side kick panel. it has in it some relays to test the motor at start up and this box actually does the motor engagement. i suppose its possible the relay is shorted and when it engages it blows the fuse. testing without the motor plugged in is a good idea but the self test at start up might know the motor is unplugged and disable the system. in case you didnt know motor is on driver side and is right next to the front drive shaft.
also the bravada doesnt use an encoder motor. the awd computer will engage this motor at speed difference between front and rear drive shaft and it will disengage unless it sees slip continue. i have taken this motor apart (at least on mine) and there was no encoder wheel in it. its a dumb motor (again on mine).

Re: awd not working
If it's still under warranty, the dealer is obligated to make the repairs to your satisfaction. You need documentation of repairs not being made.
You might call a repair shop that gives free estimates, let them check it out (even if you have to pay for the computer scan) then copy that info and estimate, show the estimate to the dealer showing you now have documented the problem at this date...for warranty protection. If they stall, consult with a lawyer for further action. Oldsmobile is out of business so who's gonna issue a recall on a defective AWD? When the GM warranty time/milage runs out, you'll be just plain out of luck and any Smartrak issues will be your financial burden to bear...or start selling parts off it. |

You will need a transmission /engine capable scanner. You may be able to rent one but it may be better to. Find another dealer or a good repair shop. Tip on going to the dealer Ask that only a factory certified gasoline engine performance specialist work on your car. Not all dealerships are concerned with how repairs are dispatched, and not all dealership techs bother to take advantage of the training offered by Factory(the vast majority of which is paid training). If the dealer is uncooperative, ask for your money back and call around for a dealer that will accommodate you. Or tips on finding a good repair shop. Check around Ask around Word of mouth. Family friends coworkers neighbors business people and delivery people. Mailmen and parcel delivery people get around and notice a lot of stuff. Even a good parts house knows what shops are good and not good. Chamber of commerce and better business bureau and city hall. If you find a good referral to a repair shop go look them over and talk to them. Look for a clean looking busy place with nice people running it. Ask a few questions and ask about their qualifications and training. Not all places have trained tech/mechanics. If they do not find a place that does. Even all dealers do not have all trained techs/mechanics. MT
