94 escort rear drum removal
Can someone tell me the size of the spindle nut? I read from another post that a 91 was 1 1/4 in., but want to make sure for a 94.
Also, can you tell me what they should be torqued to when put back on? Thanks in advanced. |

Re: 94 escort rear drum removal
You don't need to remove the spindle nut to work on the brakes. Just remove the two screws that hold the drum in place and tap it with a hammer to loosen it. Unless you are replacing the bearings too, removing this nut is a waste of time.

Re: Re: 94 escort rear drum removal
Good news, thanks. I guess I'll have to pick up some PB to loosen it up.
I might as well ask a few more questions. I get an intermittent sqeak after stoping and starting. I come to a stop, applying the brakes, I then take off and the brakes sqeak. I was thinking the return springs aren't pulling the shoe off the drum. Also, when I pulled the wheel off and turned the hub, I could feel the brakes catching, not the whole rotation of the wheel, but on and off during the rotation. Out of round maybe? I just wanted to open it up and see what's going on. |

Re: 94 escort rear drum removal
According to Farshid in another thread he had to remove the spindle nut to get his drums off. The Chiltons manual doesn't state this but the only way he could get his drums off was to remove the spindle nut. Maybe it is the model or time of year it was produced I don't know. Good Luck in removing the drums because at this point I am thoroughly confused about which way to go!

on my 94 tracer you only need to remove that nut if you are planning on replacing the wheel bearing hub.

Just to reply and help anyone who is searching in the future...I did NOT have to remove the spindle nut. I finally had to use a pulley puller to get the dang thing off. When I moved to the other side, the drum just came off after a few whacks with a rubber mallet.
HTH... |

Re: 94 escort rear drum removal
after removing the two screws from the drum, screw them INTO the OTHER two holes on the drum as that pushes the drum off...
