92 525I to 95 525I w/VANOS???- HELP!

Hi all,
I have a 92 525I, the engine blew, and I've since dropped in a M50 engine from a 95. The problem I'm having is a no start and I'm thinking its because the solenoid on the cylinder head for the VANOS system is not hooked up. Can this new engine from a 95 be made to run without the VANOS or should I be looking to swap my original DME for one from a 95??? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
