superbird vinyl top?

why did plymouth have to hide the bodywork on the roof with vinyl? was it because of different quaterpanels?

The vinyl top was a dress-up option on the Superbird as well as other models of Plymouths. Some had them and some didn't. The rear windows on all were reworked by hand off the assembly line.
