theres a monster in my z
ok well i just noticed there is a weird noise comming from the driver side of my car. it only makes the noise when the car is idiling tho.. it is like a weird growling noise like , rIn RoN RiN RoN. well thats the best description i could give. also you cant really here it if u pop the hood, but you can here it clear as day if u put your ear against the driver side fender, any idea what this could be, my friend said it sounded like a bad distributer bearing or something but as i just found out there is no distributor. im hoping its not my turbo. but i dont think it is cause when i rev the car it goes away and comes back when its idling or driving at low rpms
any help would be greatly apreciated.

that would be you're AIV's gurgling...
rip em out...they are about useless anyways, and its cheaper to remove them than to have the unit rebuilt.

Air Induction Valve's...takes air from your Cat's and recirculate its back into the intake tubes. sometimes you can drill a small hole in the bottom of one of the hoses and this will stop the gurgling. most people remove them... here is a pretty good write-up on cleaning them... http://twinturbo.net/ttnettech/aiv/aiv.html if you have stock Mid-pipes then you will need to seal the metal line coming off of the Cat's once removed or you can just buy testpipes

Re: theres a monster in my z
yeah either AIV's, or the carrier bearing which might have been what your friend was refering too., its the support bearing in the middle of the 2-piece drive shaft. When that bearing goes bad it can make a sound like that

its really a simple processs to take them out... 1. remove wheel 2. remove fender well plastic covers 3. unbolt AIVs 4 plugs all holes that the hoses from the AIVs are leading to. you will be surprise at how heavy they are...some people get them rebuilt, i dont know why. most people just remove them completely because they are useless....

Re: Re: Re: theres a monster in my z
this is interesting, a 30lb reduction for very light labor. Hmm... should this be recommended for those who have working ones? I mean why not if they don't serve much purpose, right?

Re: theres a monster in my z
yeah, aiv's are prettymuch useless... just help at low rpm's for something.... no harm in pulling them out as long as you plug all the holes that they came from..
