my friend has a pimped out yugo, its blue and he has a blue muffler can thing, yellow whindshield wipers, yellow cd player face, and the bue and yellow montage continues throughout the car. i do not, in anyway, condone the ricing of any car especially the three mentioned in this thread, but i have to admit that his yugo looks hilarious and its, uuuuuuhhhhh, unique?

I have to say Pinto. I owned more than one. Pumped that 2300 up and had some fun.

I was running poorly one day, had just installed some new Bosch Platnums (they had just come on the market) and the motor just wasn't quite right, anyway, I got STOMPED by a frigging turbo Metro.. I mean STOMPED... 150 yards, 2 lanes into one, he had 5 or so car lengths on me. Hung my head in shame, and yanked those Bosch's.

I wonder why they stopped making the turbo Sprint's and Metro's. At least with the turbo you didn't have to play Fred Flintstone to get it up hills at highway speeds!!

Sprint Turbo

I have an 87 Sprint Turbo, 3rd owner since 92'. It is my little red rocket! I love spending $15-20 av a tire when they need replacement as well.

I have timed 0-60 in 8.4 seconds and even with 180k miles I have smoked a modified 88 Scirocco 16v, a mid 80's 5.0 Mustang on the freeway as well as a Beretta GTZ, a new Accord V6, and more recently my friends mildly modified 99' VR6 GTI pulled me 2 car lengths.

Long live the quick, reliable, 38mpg 87-88 Sprint!

BTW... I also own a 74' Ford Pinto~ 2.0 (German Engine) w/ 26,480 ORIG miles, A kind of goldish brown color called "Saddle Bronze", owned by a little old lady. I like it, certainly does get it's share of ...uhhh..."looks"

Hmmm?

Hellooooo

Actually, the Pinto did my all means HAVE a defective gas tank design (not denying this in anyway)
However, there was a mass recall for all 71-74 sedans (that is the non-wagon model, Wagons did NOT have the design flaw) to correct the problem. The recall was done on my car in 75' (good thing, huh?

Many people that are not aware of all the facts (you got to be quite an auto enthousiast to research the history of the Pinto I suppose!
essentially the 75-80' models, no matter whether it was a sedan, hatchback Runabout model, or wagon, were all perfectly safe and in compliance with the safety and crash requirements of the time.

Funny thing huh?, they were around for a full 9+ yr run!! Not many so called "Lemons" have that long of a model run. : )

Pinto's final demise was due to the obvious publicity from the one fatal flaw in the 71-74 models, and what did Ford do but introduce a the far more mediocre Early "Escort" line to replace it.

Otherwise, and I mean I like many lines of cars and have a pretty good knowledge of most cars pluses and minuses....the Pinto was pretty underated and had quite a few really good atributes.

Some? Simple to maintain (change the timing belt ev 45 k, and adjust the valves every 15k on 2 liters, and give the 3000 mile oil change) and the car will run for an almost indeffident amount of time.

Aftermarket is HUGE for the 4 cylinder. Can rev to 8000RPM without missing a beat. turbos can be added, swap Merkur turbo motors as a nice clean fit w/ a lighter chassis to boot, pump the stock bullet proof engine to 250 hp with aftermarket parts, some people swap a V8 which I am not as much a fan of due to handling and balance not as strong...but nevertheless...they are good cars. Not like the best car ever of anything but, I would choose a well maintained older Pinto fromt he early 70's over a new Hyundai, Dawoo, Kia, or even Cavalier ANYDAY.

Kenny
