OD light flashing....again.

95 Explorer, 4wd, 110,000 miles. Over last couple of years, Od light would start flashing, along with a noticable 'clunk' when nearing a stop. Had trans checked and serviced. Problem goes away but comes back about 6-9 months later. OD light is flashing again only this time, it has only been a week. Trans shop said error code pointed to 3rd gear speed ratio (I think). Said there was some metal on screens this time. Said I need to sell car. Another shop I called said 95-96 trans were trouble. Desperate for sound advise. Thanks in advance.

Re: OD light flashing....again.

I have the same exact problem. It started about 2 months ago and the same symptums are occuring! I have taken the car to a tranny and engine place and both of them have given me inconclusive answers with the exception of it could be th egr valve. did you ever get the problems fixed or did you end up selling it? what in the hell should i do?

FWIW, my Check Engine light has been on for about 4 months (EGR Valve) and I have NEVER had the O/D light flash. There are 3 different OBD codes for the EGR. It SHOULD show Check Engine if the EGR is involved.

Fofoauto, sent you an email. For anyone else, I found another tranny shop and the guy really took his time and checked the car out, long test drive with me. Said there may be some chatter between 2nd and 3rd probably due to normal wear. Noted also that Ford trans give error sometimes when they overheat for various reasons. Suggest I try some additive that is supposed to make them run cooler and reduce wear friction by 50%. We did, my problem is gone, very smooth, quiet, and no flashing OD light! $20 fix. I will post the name of the additive asap.

Re: OD light flashing....again.

When/if the light comes back Jeff...Put a new ECM in it. That WILL stop the error code/flashing OD light for 3rd gear.
Only in 1995 model exploders.

Hopefully it stays away though
