I made a shitload of power on my B16A turbo. You don't need to build the motor until you hit around 350hp or so for a daily driver.
Just make sure you have ample fuel and spark, and good tuning. B16A turbo's are incredible. |

Your B16 won't last very long if you push it over 9psi. Check out my site.

It's just general knowledge from enthusiasts to shop owners that the rods of the B16 aren't designed for that much pressure, either from turbo or S/C. Sooner or later, they're gonna give. Probably sooner than later.

Whatcha smokin'? It's not common knowledge that the B16A is a bad motor to turbo. It is common knowledge that the B16A is the best Honda motor to turbocharge. It has a near perfect rod:stroke ratio, and the internals are extremely strong, and can withstand years of punishment, make more than 350hp stock, and can kick the crap out of all other Honda motors.
You know what makes you think that it is a bad motor? I know the answer...it starts with a T, ends with a G, and has an UNIN in the middle. If you tune a motor wrong, it will die...even if it's fully built. |

Never said the B16 is a bad motor. Just said it won't last long after 9psi. Thank you.

9psi is an arbitrary number, and means different things from different turbochargers, therefore making it a pointless statement. A B16A can last just as long as ANY other motor, being driven daily well above 9psi. Trust me. I've done it...a lot...and so has every single other B16A I have ever seen, that was tuned correctly. As I said before, you are being misled by improper tuning. If a shop told you, or someone else that the B16A blew because it was boosted more than 9psi, I would be willing to bet that, that was the shop that tuned the motor, and they fucked it up, and that is their cover. The B16A can last for years above 9psi...it's no secret. Please don't spread false rumors about this motor to prospective enthusiasts. The B16A is the best Honda motor to turbocharge, bar none. I don't mean to be jumpy against you, I just want you to understand that tuning is KEY, and that the B16A motor can last eons above and beyong 9psi. |

Well, it's obvious you have more experience than me on the B16. I've been going from what I've been told. But, I just can learn from my own personal experiences. Most everyone I've talked to (on this post) will not go above 9psi before they upgrade the stock internals. That's what I've heard from a lot of people. Just to verify, my 99 Civic EX SOHC IS a B16, right?

I have tons upon tons of experience with the B16A, along with other Honda motors. Your motor is not a B16A, yours is a D16(something). The B16A first appeared in Japan in 1988 or 1989, in the EF chassis CRX's and Civic's. The B16A is the DOHC VTEC motor. It made its way to America in the DelSol DOHC VTEC models, and in the 99-00 Civic Si.
You have a D-series SOHC motor. The SOHC motors can handle some boost, contrary to what some believe. I used to have a D16Z6 (1995 Civic EX) SOHC VTEC with the GReddy kit on it. I pushed 14.7psi out of that fucker...had it running low 13's with the stock internals (except a GReddy 2mm head gasket). Trust me man, Honda motors aren't weak...it's just the poor tuning that kills them. |
