The Yugo Returns! (True story)
Malcolm Bricklin, the man who brought Ameicans the mixed bag of the Subaru, Bertone (Fiat) X1/9, Pininfarina Azurra (Fiat Spider), Yugo, and the car he named after himself (the Bricklin, not the Malcolm), returns for what he claims to be his swan song.
Bricklin has made a deal with Zastava (the maker of the car we lovingly called the Yugo) to import new cars. By late 2003, he expects to begin marketing the new ZMW (Zastava Motor Works, not be be confused with the similar brand in Bavaria). Although pictures have surfaced of a concept Zastava showed at a car show in Eastern Europe, no actual cars have been demonstrated by Bricklin or his new operation. Asking price for the new ZMW? They will undercut the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio (currently the two least expensive cars on the American market) by THOUSANDS! Bricklin claims that the new cars will range from $5,000 to $9,000. A recent interview with someone who has worked with Bricklin in the past stated that anyone working with the entrepreneur today should have his head examined. |

Thats awesome, I think. I don't know which is worse though, the fact that its a Yugo in disguise, or the fact that they sound like rip-off BMW's.
"oh, you drive a BMW?" "no, its a ZMW." I think I would go around calling it a Zastava. It almost sounds exotic...

Check out the September Automobile, page 20. They have an interview. The cars will be called ZMW (Zastiva motor works, located in Serbia).
The guy says he wishes he could have called them Yugos, for the name recognition He expects them in the fall of 2003. The cost: 5k for the 2 door, 7k for the 4 door, 8k for the pickup, and 9k for the convertible. LEts just say, that no matter the price, I won't be buying one.

I wonder if they will be like the Yugo my uncle had to drive from San Diego to Palm Springs in third gear. Why third gear? Because the shift lever broke off in his hands a half mile from S.D.
