Chevy VS. Ford
Chevy VS. Ford, Vega VS. Pinto.
(pinto orange, Vega white) Mmmmmm, pinto. So who's the overall winner?

Between Vega and Pinto there is no winner. The Pinto had the exploding gas tank, and the early Vega's had an unreliable engine.

I seem to recall that the early Vegas also had a very bad rust problem, and that both these cars were built below average standards of quality. But if you had to, what which would you pick?

If I had to I would pick the Vega. I actually owed one many years ago. I ended up dumping alot of money into it.

The popular engine swap for the vega was to squeeze a 327 into it.

I'd go with the vega , One time I saw one with a blown 454 in it and it left an impression on me

Deffidently the Pinto~
Pinto~s are actually not bad cars. There was a recall to take care of the unsafe fuel tank design, so that is of no concern. They made these cars for a full 10 yrs as well. (They cant be THAT bad)
Parts are cheap and if you add a cam, exhaust, header, and port the head a little they will make 140+ hp and scream to 7000 RPM. Think Cosworth Ford. The 2 liter from 71-74 is especially nice and made in Germany. A clean one that is purchased for $500 and has about $300 in mods if one is careful with there budget can mess up a lot of new sporty Hondas. Most important think is to replace the timing belt every 40k on the 4 cylinder Pinto. Vegas rust like there is no tomorrow. They do not have a the slick shifter and balanced handling of the Pinto either. They are not reliable as well.

Pinto! You have to get hit really hard from the rear and have a bad gas tank for it to explode (just replace the damn thing and put a steel bumper on the car).

Speaking of Cosworth, the Vega had a Cosworth tuned version. The DOHC I4 Vega was the one. I think the only things from Cosworth were the heads and maybe the intake system.
