98 Cavalier z24 clutch issues

I bought my '98 Z24 off a friend not long ago and a month into it started noticing the clutch got real loose... long story short, i ended up getting it replaced by a family friend who is also a mechanic. and he's not really my family friend, it's on my wife's side of the family. Well since i got it back i've noticed the clutch isn't as loose as it used to be but it seems to catch rather oddly when i'm shifting. almost the same feeling you feel when going over a speed bump, i feel under my foot as i let the clutch out then it grabs and instead of a gradual start or acceleration, it's a sudden surge of speed. my thoughts are it either needs to just be broken in so it moves smoother or maybe it needs to be adjusted. what does it sound like to you all and what do you suggest?
