I used the old Kenmore Upright vac with detachable hose fittings and the bag removed, which worked well for me. With it being an upright-vac the hose and switch are at a height that is even with the stove and within easy reach while vacuumforming.

As far as the extra bracing on the interior goes, I considered doing just that but never got around to it. The suction really puts a lot of force on the perfbord, especially when you start adding items such as plastic wrap to intensify suction around your master. Two thick pieces of plastic (or even Plexi-glass) cut to size, large holes cut into the middle and then installed at a 45 degree angle should work fine (see diagram).
