I Agree; and say there is no way you can get 600+Bhp out of an original GT Turbos engine. once you put the boost pressure nearing the 32 psi mark they will and DO explode. the most you can get is around 240Bhp fully Maxed; 300Bhp with nitrous and water injection; but who would be that insane? I mean it WOULD go bang without a doubt! I live in england and I am a dedicated GT Turbo Follower and proud owner, I know My stuff and anyone that knows a thing or two about the GT Turbo should too! if you still don't belive what I have told you then ask the worlds leading R5 GT Turbo Tuners. please see enclosed: k-tec racing: www.k-tecracing.com, BB Performance Tuning: www.bbperformancetuning.co.uk and finally GT Tuning: www.gttuning.com and if you still don't belive what I am saying then go ahead and buy one, and watch when it blows itself to pieces. as for the people that have read the the 600bhp+ artical, don't be mislead if it was true it is not using the Original engine that was designed for the car, what im saying is don't try anything stupid, there few enough of them left as it is!

@goof. 300hp is not enough but i have to agree that 650 is to much. the french renault fan had one of those rally cars. called "le monster" and that had 480hp or so.

(off topic) die amerikanen weten echt niet wat een 5gtt is. zo'n ding hebben ze nog nooit gezien. en ze zijn er al helemaal niet in geintereseerd. (end offtopic)

There is a big difference between the R5 turbo and the R5 GT Turbo. The first one has only been produced in limited number starting beguinning of the 80's, was middle engined, and conceived mostly for rallying. 3 versions came out successively Turbo, Turbo 2 and Maxi Turbo. The latest one which was the most powerfull of the three ended up at 350 hp. However this car was classified as a Group B car which can explain why it can be mistaken with higher horse powered cars. The second one was the beefed up version of the production car, produced in larger number, front engined and which only appeared with the mark 2. The only rally version of it were modified group N.

Exclamation R5

I would like to purchase a R5 Turbo (Maxi) unless anyone knows a similiar and better overall car for drag racing. I will spend 20,000$ buying it and 10,000$ modifing. I was wondering which of the Renaults are the best and what I should do to them. Also thier weight and wiether they are rear or front wheel drive. please email me... gw999999999@yahoo.com

A renault for drag racing...that is a new idea.

For your info. this r5 turbo is rwd. engine in the back. but i don;t hink there suiteab;e for drag racing. The body isn't firm enough to handle big forces. and it only a 1.5. and 20000 dollar get you nowhere. there around 25000 euro's for a maxi.

Re: Amazing R5 Turbo 2---FOR SALE

I am in Central Florida, USA (just north of Orlando) and have a 1981 R5 Turbo II for sale. The car is undamaged from any collisions or rust but needs someone to sort out a very few problems and some tidying up. Interior is not gutted. Has power windows. It is ALL BLACK with Cobra leather seats, factory bolt-in cage, after-market injection management system, alter-market exhaust header - which puts the Turbo closer to the exhaust ports, extra gauges, Turbo Cup Race Series 3-pc. Gotti rims (7X13 & 10X13) with good race slicks mounted. These rims are VERY rare. Also has a limited-slip differential. Car is NOT USA street legal. It HAS been street driven in the past and someone added A/C. I may remove the NEW compressor for one of my other cars. Intercooler has been split open - approx. doubled in size and converted to air-to-water cooling. (Originally air-to-air)
I bought this car on a whim to resurrect, but it is beyond my limited mechanicing skills. Besides, I have 4 other projects here. (my main one is '84 Honda CRX dual-Accord engined 4WD pocket rocket built by Racing Beat for Car & Driver magazine)
Engine has just been disassembled, scored crankshaft rebuilt and re-assembled by a pro who worked on an English R5 race team. Brakes are 90%. Car has rear coil-over Bilsteins and front Koni's. Has BRAND NEW Sachs dual-disc clutch ($1,500). Only the doors and rear hatch are steel. I think it weighs about 2,100 pounds. Turbo has JUST been rebuilt and S.Steel muffler is as new. Car cranks and runs cleanly but needs "tuning.
PROBLEMS: Has an oil leak which I think is either the timing cover or valve cover gasket. I have ALL parts. Fuel mgmt. system needs adjustment as I can't get the idle and gas pedal response right. AirSensors fuel mgmt. control box just gone through by THE specialist on these systems. Car needs exterior paint. I can see red paint through some paint cracks in the doors.
Shifter rod/linkage is missing a cpl. of parts and is sloppy. I have some of the parts and a source in Texas for parts. Also one European source. The "under-seat" passenger gas tank is damaged and not in the car (line blocked off) so only the drivers side under-seat tank is functional. Really needs a front trunk fuel cell installed.
This car is actually in sound condition and would not take much to use it for track days, autocrosses or whatever kind of racing you desire. (Vintage?)
I bought the car from a Daytona Alfa racer friend whose business is foreign car repairs. He is honest and told me he has seen this car accelerating hard & HAULING ASS on the road and blowing flames out the exhaust on the over-run. Said it is WICKED quick when running right.
I have digital pics and I have WAY over $22,000 spent on the car but will take around $12,000 for it as it is just sitting here due to my time being spent track daying & autocrossing a built Corvair (Yenko Stinger clone).
Email for more info/questions/pics at taruffi57@aol.com (t a r u f f i )
There is NO BS in the above info and this car is NOT misrepresented in any way. Car cannot be driven to your home.

Thanks,
Joe
