Re: engine overheating of my pontiac transport 1990

COnnect A and B as shown with key OFF
TUrn KEY ON (do not start engine)
One light on the dashboard will start flashing 1 bip, then 2, wait, 1 bip, 2 more, wait, 1 bip, 2 more.....this is code 12 repeated 3 times just to tell you the computer has accepted diagnostic mode.
Then any stored codes will flash the light like code 34 would be 3 bips, wait then 4 bips, wait and repeat 2 more times...thehn nesxt code if any
If all it flashes is code 12, it means there are no stored codes.
THis is THE way to do it. Real simple and easy.

then the codes can be interpreted using this:
www.avigex.ca/xport/codes31.jpg

ahh OK I read your message after posting this.
ANyway, the codes if any would have been interesting, but they do not reveal mechanical conditions anyway. I ,might have expected a code 21 or 22 because of the high idle, a possibility, but
YOU still have the overheating problem...
You will have to investigate....so use the hints I told above to check for causes .

Re: engine overheating of my pontiac transport 1990

What did you used to join connectors A and B? a small wire or paperclip...? ANyway, FOrget about the codes....not an issue here..but I wonder why at least it does not show a code 12.....

Well there is no oil temperature...there is oil pressure gauge and engine temperature gauge.

The oil pressure indicator is a fake on the 3.1....it is just a pressure switch on the engine and if there is some pressure, it contacts and will show always the same "pressure"....but is it meaningless...except to say you do have "some" pressure.

Re: engine overheating of my pontiac transport 1990

repair manual is like 2000 pages....so any printout would cost more in ink than buying the manual from e-bay.com There are several authentic GM manuals available almost at any time with keywords "pontiac transport manual" - both user and repair - . Service manual 90-91 covers just the 3.1 but the 92-95 pair keeps covering the 3.1 in addition to the 3.8 and all are compatible with your needs.

ANyway data can be downloaded from www.autozone.com ; there is some interesting info but a large part is generic ..somewhat like Haynes or Chilton ...and may or may not apply to your specific car, and details are scarce. ALso try http://www.carspace.com http://www.chiltondiy.com/

Finally, there are several diagrams and other info on my site at
www.avigex.ca/xport

These conditions most probably would not be resolved by reading codes. Not being able to read the codes as was explained before might indicate a problem with the computer itself... which cannot be resolved by other means than replacement.. I'd like to hear the exact description of how you tried it : did you read and apply the exact procedure from the link www.avigex.ca/xport/readingcodes.jpg I posted before ?
Did you try to run the engine WITHOUT the thermostat as I asked before?..and report what happens.
OR/and top off the radiator, leave cap off, run engine and look for bubbles exiting the radiator.Let a helper throttle up the engine in rapid surges while you watch.
Having a compression test might procure some information, specially if a cylinder happened to be much lower than others
