82 El Camino Carb Filter Fitment

I'm looking for an open element air filter for my 1982 V6 3.8L 231cid El Camino, everything I have found has a circular base but my carburetor has a weird semi-circle/trapezoid shape. I believe it is the stock carb but I'm not 100% sure. Here are some pictures of the carb. Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

(not quite sure how to add photos so hopefully one of these works)

The reason you're finding round filters is because you need a base that sits on the carb that the filter will rest on. Then a lid will sit on it. There is usually a stud that sticks out of the carb that the lid will slide over then you use wingnuts to secure it all together.

Re: 82 El Camino Carb Filter Fitment

You will need to get an air cleaner for an E2ME carb, which is what is pictured. Easier said than done; this carb was a 'bastard carb' being the primary only section of a Quadrajet, and being fitted on vehicles from about 1978 to 1982 and usually on V6's or small V8s (i.e. 267 cubic inch).

There are no aftermarket air cleaners or filters for these that I am aware of.

Is there some sort of adapter that I need between the carb and base?

Re: 82 El Camino Carb Filter Fitment

If you can find the proper base then it sits right on the carb. It has the proper opening in the bottom to fit the carb.

its probably a bad idea but could I cut off the base of the stock filter and just get a new lid? I have access to welding supplies and metal working tools but I dont want to get dust in my engine. Thanks

Look up Mr. Gasket Dual Jet Air Cleaner Adapters 6400. Looks like it adapts a standard round air cleaner to the shape of your carb.
