Small water leak behind water pump

Got a small coolant leak where the water inlet pipe attaches to the back of the water pump in my '93. It's just a small leak so I'm not really worried about it, but wanted to see what was involved in fixing it if I end up changing the coolant fluid at some point.

The book I have doesn't help much. How does the water pipe attach to back of the water pump? Push in, screw in, etc? Is there a seal, gasket, or o-ring at that point?

The bar is bolted to the back of the block in the middle of the pipe. Remove the screw, take off the hoses attached, and twist and pull. It's held in by a rubber O-ring.

OK - thanks. I'll try to find out what size o ring it is and have one on hand when a good time comes about to change it.

Re: Small water leak behind water pump

Leak has gotten worse; time to fix it. Anyone know what size o-ring is at the water pump end of the water pipe?

Just a thought, Jim... you might consider pulling out the water tube and measuring the o-ring size, then putting a gob of RTV blue sealant around the tube behind and in front of the ring and pushing it back in. Then waiting overnight to run the engine. Might stop or slow the leak until you can get the replacment. And you might find it's something else that's causing the leak in the process...

Hopefully, though, there's someone out there with an o-ring handy and can provide you the measurements.. Take care, Rick

Re: Small water leak behind water pump

I just removed my transaxle and replaced my clutch. In the process that darn tube started leaking behind the water pump. My GM Manual refers to it as the Coolant Pump Inlet Pipe. No installation or removal instructions and not even a picture of it. I am going to try that "remove all the hoses twist and pull out" method and I will go to GM and ask for the O-ring. If they have it or will give me the size in O.D./I.D and cross-sectional diameter of the donut itself I will log back on and share the info. I will also let you know if this method works and if I have any further leaking issues.

There's at least one screw, some cars have two. It's a generic o-ring, I've heard of guys just buying one at a hardware store.

Re: Small water leak behind water pump

I have two original O-rings left. If you can't find one, e-mail your address and I'll send one.
DLang(at)bright.net. The water inlet tube has a round groove that holds an O-ring. The pump also has the same groove. The O-ring slips into place causing a bond when you insert the tube. GM part #96059933
