My F-150.... Should have bought somthing else
I have a 2001 F-150 5.4L XLT Super Cab. Love the look, the color, the rides not to bad, it is a truck so it won't ride like a car, but one thing I absolutely hate is the performance. Now, I don't have a lot to compare it to. My last vehicle was a 1994 Camaro Z28. Had a few mods, nothing special, I guess about 300-325 H.P. But I hate the way my truck runs. When I slow to make a turn onto a side street, and step on the gas it won't get out of its own way! It stays in second gear, bogs down and hardly accelerates. I have to floor it to make it down shift and accelerate. Also, as soon as I put a trailer on it, it dies. I towed an 18' open trailer with a 67' Volkswagen and a 250 dirt bike, and when I hit the grades I slowed down to about 35 M.P.H. My 1977 Dodge motor home with the same load does 45-50 up the same hill. Tell me that that is not a disappointment in the power arena. My dad has a 1999 F-150 5.4L Super Cab. His truck hauls ass compared to mine. Does any one have any suggestions on how I can make my truck run right? At this point I wish I bough something else!

Re: My F-150.... Should have bought somthing else
Just browsing and caught your post. I have a 2003 F-150 4x4 and priviously a 97. I had the same issue with the 97 and it was faulty catalytic converters that caused all the trouble the truck was crap for power .My local dealer tested exhaust flow and found the problem. The truck ripped after the repair. Hope this helps!

Ford trucks SUCK! they are all crapy, even the new ones. They dont even back thier vehicles whith a good warranty. What kind of a warranty is 3 years/ 36,000 miles. Now Dodge is a different story. Thier trucks rule and they back them with a 7 year/ 70,000 mile warranty. What do you say to that you ford owners???
DODGE RULES!!!!!!!!!! |

98' F150 5.4
Don't give up on it. Check the f150.com forum for answers to this problem too.
I had to deal with "the" blown spark plug problem with mine, but after the Big-Sert repair on one spark plug, I love this truck again. I own a 98' 4x2 and have an 02' that is a 4X4 company vehicle with the same motor. Sounds to me like Tile19 is onto something. This really is a fine truck, ya just have to get it repaired. I grew up on chevy trucks, had a 70' T-bird, with a 429, and a few 68' 289 Mustangs. I liked the look of the 98' F150, the consumer reports article and got one. All in all, they don't make anything like they use to, sure miss that T-bird and 72' Malibu Chevelle 350. |

Your dad makes the drive shafts and they are shit?? what would that tell you? Forget the Toyota, you could put one of those on the back of any American truck, Ford, Chevy, or Dodge and haul it plus the rated load caps! |

Re: My F-150.... Should have bought somthing else
hello mikey9821. First I'd try tile19's suggetion, If that's not it here are a few other's. Check all vacum line's for cracke's if one's craked you could be losing power due to that. Check your distributar cap's plug wire's and all the plug wire's on the block. Also check spark-plugs. I had a 1994 F-150 4.9 300 straight six which did the same thing your talking about. It was 1 year old when I bought it from the dealer, After six months it started running like a dog, they couldn't seem to find the prob. A friend told me to replace the spark-plugs and only with motorcraft ford plugs. The truck had ac delco in it. I replaced the plugs, wires and the cap and the truck hauled loads like a champ up hilles! Never had another power prob out of it again.

Re: My F-150.... Should have bought somthing else
my dad had a 1966 f-250 with a 1973 v8 angine,4-speed manual tranny,it was the big camper edition,so it had a really good suspension.I loved it!we would fill the whole bed with sand, and it had no probles in hills or anything,i think it was the best truck we ever had.but we sold it.now we have a 93' f-150.They aite, but i think japan cars and trux are way better.but anyway, can someone tell me the hp,tq,1/4,and 0-60 time of the 93' XLT f-150 with a 4.9 6l?thanx.

If I'm not mistaken Navistar makes the Diesel engines for Ford, and Chevys duramax dosent even come close in Hp TQ or build quality. Also I have a friend that works driving a car hauler for GM's Fort Wayne truck plant. (where they make silverado's) And he was told not to strap the trucks down too tight because they have been having problems with the frames bending. Chevys suck get it right, damn snap together, Generic Motors, yuk. |
