whining noise when its cold outside

My 2002 durango has a whinning noise in it when it gets to 0 or colder--like minus 25 or even colder. Notice it sitting still or driving it. doesn't seem to go away even after the motor has warmed up.
changed the serpine belt last fall when it started the noise then someone said it could be the altenator--anyone else have this problem?
I watch my guages to see if they change and they stay the same.

Re: whining noise when its cold outside

Did you ever figure it out? I have a full size dodge ram van and today it got down to +5 degrees F and it started whining too. It's obviously the torque convertor and you're right it doesn't stop even when the engine is warm. I'm wondering if there's some kind of moisture in the trans that's freezing up and plugging the trans fluid flow. The trans is working fine but it whines pretty loud. Anyone have any ideas...it seems like it's always something HELP????????????

Re: whining noise when its cold outside

I had some bearrings put in the alternator thinking it was coming from there --nope not that.although it seems not as loud but now someone said it might be the idler pulley-guess I might try the cheap things first-geez it was minus 40 degrees this morning--maybe that had something to do with the whinning.

Re: whining noise when its cold outside

my 03 durango has a whining noise (besides the one coming from the kids in the back) although I don't think cold has anything to do with it. I am thinking maybe alternator but want some second opinions. It is definitely controlled by the speed of the motor and it's always there. It almost sounds like an electric servo motor only constant. It isn't very loud.
