Driveshaft Bearing?

Hey all,
I have a 2003 Sorrento and noticed a vibration under the car. Neighbor said it looked as if the driveshaft bearing was shot/gone and it was metal hitting against metal. 1) Is this a do-it-yourself replacement? 2)Is the part readily available? Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Re: Driveshaft Bearing?

I dont know anything about Sorrento's, so cant help. Kia is currently advertising a 10 year 100,000 warranty on the drivetrain, so find out if yours is still covered.
And what is the nature of the noise? Is it always there? Is it only on speed up or only on slow down. Does it change with brakes being applied. Is it proportional to the vehicle speed? Is it different in different gears? Does it still happen if you shut the motor off and coast along?

I find it helpful to drive along parallel & close to a solid wall, with the windows down. The back of the Walmart or other superstore for instance. This reflects sounds that you normally wouldnt hear. Driving first one way, then the other, can sometimes help you to decide if the noise is on the right side, left side, or in the middle.

Re: Driveshaft Bearing?

Sounds like a u-joint. I'm not even sure a kia sports a typical u-joint but if it does, confirm that it is a problem u-joint then remove the drive shaft and take it to a local parts house that will sell you the u-joints and install them. Replace both front and rear.

Here's a tutorial that should give you an idea of what's involved should you decide to do it yourself or the parts house doesn't do installs. The tutorial describes replacement for a jeep, but it should get you on the right track.

My 2006 has grease fittings on the U-Joints, keep them greased.

Almost all bearings have a bearing number on them. You can take the drive shaft to an automotive machine shop. They can remove the old bearing and press on a new bearing. Dixie bearing,Bearings Inc can also get bearings. I do this for my movers as I have a 20 ton press. A lot of Napa stores have presses. Call around before removing the drive shaft. You can also use a sledge like the previous poster.
http://www.ebay.com/ Search Kia sorento bearing. They have one listed around $95.00
