Disable the steering wheel lock ?
Hi guys,
I would like to disable the steering wheel lock on a 2002 Dodge Caravan. My reason is to tow it on a car dolly as a "toad". My understanding is that from 2003 forward these minivans did not have this feature as the keys had a chip in them and it was no longer necessary. Any advice is welcome. Mike |

Re: Disable the steering wheel lock ?
If its going to be on a two wheel dolly you have no need to disable the steering lock since the dolly should pivot and do the steering for the vehicle.

But the "Cartowdolly" made in N.C. does not have steerable axles, and unless the car is allowed to pivot on the front axle, the dolly wheels skid around the smallest turn, and wear out rapidly. Ask me how I know. Been there, done that. Mike |

Re: Disable the steering wheel lock ?
If that's the case you can't "disable" it easily. You will have to put the key in the ignition and put it to the on position to keep the wheel from locking. You'll have to disconnect a battery terminal to keep from killing the battery.

I don't think there is a slotted disk under the clock spring, but there could be. Does the key locking cylinder have a "pin" that I could just grind off, and if so, would doing this affect any other operating systems ? All the Dodge steering wheel illustrations that I pull up on the web seem very vague in this area. When I figure this out, I will post the solution for those who follow..... Thanks, Mike |

Re: Disable the steering wheel lock ?
O.K. so now we are up to 193 lookers, and no response.
Really need a techie to jump in here and answer the basic question. HOW DOES THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK ? CAN I GRIND SOMETHING OFF TO PREVENT IT FROM LOCKING ? WILL THAT AFFECT ANY OTHER SYSTEM ? MIKE Last edited by pmpmrs@amigo.net; 02-24-2016 at 09:30 PM. Reason: Looker count went up. |
