Saying Goodbye: Mazda Halts Rotary Engine Production
For those of you who were holding out for a new iteration in the RX family, you wait has now been moved from un-known to un-likely (yes, I know neither of those words have hyphens in them).
Mazda has announced that they will cease production of their RX-8 rotary engine car. Part of the reason for the decision appears to stem from a clear decline in RX-8 sales over the last few years. But fear not, rotary-lovers - this may be a simple "pause" for re-evaluation that results in a new demand for rotary-driven cars. The story from AutoNews: Quote:
I highly doubt this is the end of the era for rotary-powered cars from Mazda, especially with the speculation about the 16X motor (though there hasn't been a ton of new news about it for a while). This should allow ample time for the RX-8 to take the same or similar path of the RX-7 predecessor and turn into a tuner-darling. And who knows - by then there may be an RX-9 in the works with more power for more fun. Only time will tell at this point.
