Re: z31 or miata

read it again, stock turbo... as in as many mods done to it as possible, yet keeping the stock turbo in there... i'm guessing it would do a mid-low 13 on the strip, but that's really not what it's built for...

i'm sure on a nice wide open road course, or most other race situations, the z31 would be cheaper and faster for the most part, but from my spectating experience which is 95% auto-x on a tight course, the miata's clean up

and whoever rebuilds a street engine after 3-4 races is an idiot... most people i've seen go at LEAST a season on an engine, some i've seen have never been rebuilt and run fine

Huh? Yea..."Fast, cheap and reliable...pick 2" is how it goes, but having to rebuild your engine after every 3 or 4 races? What? You are shifting gears, right?

Re: z31 or miata

ud b surprised, the 300zx is not an easy car to find where i live, i've looked for the past 2yrs, and have only seen 2 z31's within my comfort zone(i'd b willing to drive to and look at) whereas miatas are a dime a dozen
as for rebuiling engines, auto-x no u wont need to, but when u start getting into the upper ranks of racing u'll find out. i would know one of my friends races professionaly and i've worked with another team, Jon Groom racing

Low 13s aren't good enough for ya out of a car you paid a MAX of 3500-4000 on? That's pretty damn spiffy as far as I'm concerned. Miatas aren't too cheap as far as I know. Z31 is cuz they're unknown.

Re: z31 or miata

well, where i live, auto-x is the only racing within 300-400 miles of town... so it's all that matters to me... there isn't any street racing at all around here either

Re: z31 or miata

street racing is easy to find for me, every town has its group, even one town about 8square miles has two "clubs"
i can go find 4 miatas that r like 2500 and real close to me, tho i'd have to walk downtown and get the magazine(i lost my lisence, o well better for me on gas)
as for low 13's i cant see a z31 running low 13's stock, i dont know much about the z31 but i doubt it has enuf power or torque to get it's ass down the 1/4 in low 13's. my stealth damn near doubles the power and only does 13.5(factory time)

this is a quote from a site that lists the quater times for a z31, i forget the site:
The 84-89 turbo 300zx runs roughly 15.2-15.4 in the quarter stock. The 84-89 non turbo 300zx runs 16.4 at 84mph in the quarter stock.

Re: z31 or miata

1: 1/4 mile isn't everything.
2: Z31T (especially the 88/89 models) are really easy and cheap to mod.
3: I can't imagine it being all that much easier (if it's easier at all) to get a Miata to do it that fast.

Re: z31 or miata

it's all about aftermarket base...

once you get past basic stuff on the z31 like exhaust, intake, boost controller, etc, it's Very difficult to find parts out there that are in easy to use kits... it is getting better with z31parts.com, but it's still a pain to find all of the little things.

for the miata however, there's a Large aftermarket base for them, with many kits for both supercharging and turbocharging, along with tons of suspension goodies (no coilovers made AT ALL for the z31)

and because the miata's a go-cart in car's clothing, it's not difficult to get it to go fast... however they're fairly expensive compared to some z31's around here.... z31's are very variable in price range depending on if its from a dealer or a private sale.

Re: z31 or miata

both cars about he same age cost around 2-3g around here.
and with such a racing following for the miata i'd imagine the aftermarket, and go fast goodies are easy to find. not saying that the z isnt used for racing

Re: z31 or miata

well, the miata was rated the number 1 sports car of all time... but the z does have a very impressive racing heritage, just not the z31... nobody's ever heard of it before lol...

Well, yeah you can't really argue against that. As a sports car, the mx5 shits all over the Z31. No matter how much you dislike the mx5 for being girly, or love the Z31 because its a 300zx, the mx5 is a better car. The only thing it was lacking from factory was a little bit of grunt, but now there such a HUGE aftermarket for them it is relatively cheap to rectify its only downside.

Re: z31 or miata

honostly the mx5 isnt girly, the list goes from manly to girly: saturn sky(nice edgy look), mazda mx5(round but edgy), and then pontiac soltice(round, nothing else) the z31 kinda fits between the mx5 and sky, imo
