94 Plym. Sundance 2.2 won't start
Hey Everyone. Basic Knowledge of cars but have the trusty Haynes manual.
Initial Problem: Radiator fan won't kick on. Disconnect fan relay and fan turns on. so here's what I did. Disconnect postive and then negative cables battery. Install new Fan relay. Hook up cables. Go to start car. Got one initial click, engine did not turn over and then nothing. Haynes says, check if fusible link are blown. nope. Hook up tester to negative on battery and check my starter. Starter is good. if both batery cables connected, I can cross the starter and starter turns. HAYNES does say you can check display codes on the dashboard. Chapter 6-6. So here are the trouble codes revealed. Code 12 - "Problem with stand-by memory circuit. Direct battery input to controller disconnected within last 50 ignition key-ons." and a code 55. Code 55 - "Completion of fault code display on CHECK ENGINE lamp. This is an "End of message" code. " I'm stuck any help would be appreciated... thanks forgot to say, that fuses in car are good Last edited by jamesbee; 09-01-2004 at 10:37 AM. |

Re: 94 Plym. Sundance 2.2 won't start
If you hear one click when you try to start the car, you might want to double check the starter. It sounds like it's bad.
How the starter works: When you turn your ignition on, a solenoid mounted on top of the starter moves and engages the starter's drive into the flywheel. This is the click you hear. If it FULLY engages, contacts in the starter relay engage causing full battery voltage to go to the starter. If the drive gear fails to fully engage (sometimes the gear is damaged and don't mesh into the flywheel properly) OR the contacts of the starter relay are worn and burnt, then phase II - sending power to the starter fails to happen. Sometimes you can rotate the engine a bit and the starter will start - dead spots on flywheel when sometimes drive gear fails to mesh with flywheel teeth. Since the solenoid and starter relay and drive gear are all parts of the starter unit, just replace the starter. |
