Mitsubishi Lancer WRC Evo V

While waiting the correct suspension parts for my Peugeot, I thought why not make another "Flying Finn"? So I took this from my stash. This is Tamiya's kit originating from '98 and has been in my stash quite a few years. You can build cars no. 1 and 2, and the logical choice for me was car no. 1, Tommi Mäkinen.

You experts will probably tell me that these and these details should be corrected, but I think this will be totally OOB.

For some reason there are a few red and white liveries in my stash, this being one, and I have to admit, that they are a real P.I.T.A to paint. Red over blow on white is very hard to correct, and for some reason this happens every time Suspect that my Tamiya tape is too old and the glue doesn't hold.

Should be masked properly:

And after correcting the red leakage I still have some white on red

Re: Mitsubishi Lancer WRC Evo V

Nice work, having a perfect masking is quite impossible !
do you paint from can or airbrush ?
I use cans and I also have corrections over corrections over corrections over...
I have this in my stash, painted (strangely) successfuly on body but I failed on wing so it all went back to the box...
I have the decals to build '98 Tommi's Finland version !

My tip to apply masking tape: press with toothpick over panel lines to make tape fill the lines as much as possible.
on straigh body parts I press with a finger.
But once more perfection is a dream... expecially if painting from cans

Re: Mitsubishi Lancer WRC Evo V

Thanks Phil. I'm painting with an airbrush, I hate cans, they are impossible to use in house, and that is the only place available to me. No way painting outside, in Finnish winter!

I have tried very hard to burnish the tape on the surface, but every time it lifts up some where. The worst was this time the hood and the trunk. Trunk because I forgot those pre-drilled holes, and the red paint penetrated through them. And the hood had the tape lifting up, so that the front of the air intake was red.

Hopefully, one of these days, I will learn!

Despite the problems the paint looks pretty good. An approach I have used with some success is to put down the masking tape, then a light spray of either clear or the color under the masking tape; aimed at the edge of the tape. This way any paint that leaks is either clear or the same color. Doesn't work all the time, but mostly.

Red, white, red, white... After a couple of rounds managed to spray a couple of thin layers of clear. Tomorrow, if it comes, is time for decals.
The paint is not perfect, but I can live with it. And forget the strictly OOB, had to order those "Mitsubishi" -transfers

Re: Mitsubishi Lancer WRC Evo V

Started decaling from the "easy ones" on the roof, just to be sure those Tamiya decals behaved as expected. Then moved down to the sides. The red paint (Zero paint Bright Red for YZR M1 Valencia) doesn't quite match with the red stripe

Re: Mitsubishi Lancer WRC Evo V

The right side is done. That Ralli Art decal on rear fender isn't tall enough, have to touch up with a bit of black paint.

Re: Mitsubishi Lancer WRC Evo V

Decaling of the body is complete. I now have two bodies to clear coat. According to tracking code the correct suspension for the Peugeot has left China.
