What is it that makes the car whine...
... in reverse? Always wanted to know. The lack of synchros?

I thought they made it make that noise as a warning the car was in reverse, like the trucks have a beeper.

The reverse gears have straight cut teeth (Stronger) while the forward gears are helicle cut (Not as strong but quieter):smoka:

Is that the differnce in the Timing gear drive, like some are "quiet" and some are "noisy"?

Yes
Timing gear drives are noisy when they are fairly straight cut. Most people love having the noise though. Timing chains are the quietest:smoka: |
