Question Bad for clutch??? or transmission

ok well i was wondering something if while you are driving and you just drop it in to neutral and roll along until you feel like accelerating and put it into gear while rolling at like 40 does that hurt the car in anyway like the cluth or tranny ???

Of course the answer will depend on the specifics of the situation - if you try hard enough, you can probably find a way to damage either the clutch or the tranny. I can't think of how you'd damage anything if you shifted normally...

If you had an automatic transmission, I can think of one possible (bad) consequence - if you idled the engine while coasting, you might not pump enough trans fluid to properly lube the tranny, which could cause problems after a while. It seems like a bit of a slim chance, but I figured I'd throw it out there 'cause I can't say for sure that it wouldn't happen.

Why would you want to do a thing like that anyway?

don't think you will hurt it at all, about the only way is if you rev it and dump it out while you are rolling, but at normal speeds, it's just the same as up or down shifting

that's how i use to drive, don't leave the car in neutral to long or it will affect you in the long run. i guess it got something to do with the idea of the car being in motion and that it should not be in neutral. i know for sure, that if you'r driving an automatic and if you decide to put the car in neutral, you definitely reduce your tranny lifespan by half.

How does effect you in the long run? I sometimes put my car into neutral and shut my engine off going down hill.

now i wouldn't consider that the "pussy" way of driving stick. Sometimes I do that when its late, i'm tired, and usually stoned. It Keeps things quite when ya need things quite.

I'd have to add that in my opinion, being in neutral reduces your ability to respond quickly to unforeseen circumstances, which tends to make it less safe than being in gear.

yup, you should always do that when driving a five speed. whenever you stop, put the car in neutral, don't ever hold on to the clutch longer than 30 seconds. it's been proven that if you do that, you will have to replace your clutch within a year or less.

when i say your car get affected in the long run, i mean you will feel your tranny getting bad much faster than its suppose to last.
