building your own car/engineering

how does one design their own car, like I mean everything down to the panels. How do you go about making/designing your own engine and if you did would you need to customize the tranny ass well from scratch

all replies are appreciated, and any resources would also be appreciated.

Re: building your own car/engineering

Really, the design of a modern car is too much for one person. Different parts of the car are worked on by different groups that are trained and have experiance in that particular field. A group of experts may work on transmissions only. Other groups may work on the brakes, another team of experts may work on suspension design who may draw on the expertise of people with experience working with bushings, shock absorbers (dampers), with the input from the brake people, the chassis people, and people that work on integrating the design together. The company will have material science experts on staff to answer questions, ergonomics experts to help in control placement and seat design. Finance groups figure heavily, and very importantly, the scheduling people (statusers with their powerpoint presentations).
If they are breaking new ground, they will have people working functional tests on components. Many new parts and assemblies will have to be certified by the government as safe and meet certain standards before the car can be sold.
God help you when it comes time to design a new engine. You end up having guys laying the engine design out on computers, thermodynamics experts working on cylinder heads and pistons. Stress analysis people doing finite element analysis on the crank and block and valve gear. Experts from the foundry come in with advice on casting parts from aluminum iron, steel.
All of this is designed to a certain price point too, for a certain demographic of people.
So, that's probably a small fraction of it...........
