Windshield Washer Control
We had rain a couple days ago, for the first time in weeks. As I drove to work yesterday, some wet spots on the roads made the windshield dirty so I had to use the washers a couple times. Worked great, as always. Well, on my way home, I went to use them again, and the washer control tab on the turn signal lever just turned freely, (it is spring-loaded, so there normally is some resistance to rotating it forward, which returns it to the off position when you release it). No operation, no spring tension, nothing. It rotates forward to the usual stop, and stays there. Feels like it is completely disconnected inside.
I have no idea what things look like in there, how that rotating collar/sleeve attaches to the switch and spring, but apparently something came loose. The previous time I used it that morning there was nothing unusual. No noises, no feeling or sound like anything broke. And it the return spring had functioned normally, turning off the sprayer when I released it. Anyone know of an online diagram that would show an exploded view of the inner workings of that turn signal stalk assembly? Or anyone ever deal with this issue before? I am really easy on stuff, I never force things or use more muscle than necessary, I rarely break things like switches. Never seen or heard of this one before. Any advice would be appreciated, and thanks in advance. -Jim.

I assume this was your Silverado.
Sounds like your multifunction switch failed and will need to be replaced. The entire blinker lever assembly aka multifunction switch is a single assembly and is fairly easy to replace. Google GM Multifunction Switch and you will see what the assembly looks like. |

Wow, what a crazy difference in prices! O'Reilly is $284 for a Dorman unit, AutoZone is $233 for their house brand, (with a 20% online ship-to-home discount, so $186 delivered), Rock Auto is $124 for an Airtex replacement, and I found one on Amazon, made by Evan-Fischer and sold by Auto Parts Giant for $60 with free shipping. I read every review of it, (about 30 or 40 of them), and all were good to great, with one exception, a guy said the action was a bit stiff on the turn signal. So I went ahead and figured I would give that one a try. One of my basic rules in life is "Never buy the cheapest, OR the most expensive", but in this case I figured all signs pointed to the low-cost option. Was going to go with Rock Auto, they always beat the chain parts stores on price, but they usually offer a selection of brands, and almost always have the OEM GM/AC-Delco parts, but not on this one. Not a big fan of Airtex stuff, and since this Amazon part was half the price of Airtex, and 1/4 the price of Dorman, with so many positive reviews, I think it is worth a shot. Will post an update after part is received and installed.
