1956 Ferrari 250 TDF Long Wheelbase; HRM Resin Kit
This is a bit of a what-if; if I had ordered "my" 250 TDF from Ferrari this is the color scheme I would have chosen. To my knowledge none of the nine "14 louver" TDF's made in '56 were in this color scheme, a scheme inspired by several other Ferraris from the time period.
This is the Historic Racing Miniatures resin repop of the MG Models resin TDF; it's a very simple curbside resin kit. I replaced the resin wheels w/Hasegawa's optional photoetch wheels (I had to open up the resin tire centers for them to fit), and I used some parts box photoetch wipers. Paint is a mixture of Gunze solvent-based #8 silver w/metallic black, giving it a warm hue. The metallic scale is nearly perfect for this scale. Interior is painted Testors Flame Red lacquer. The grille, headlights, side grilles, side mirror, door handles, taillight bezels and resin knockoffs were done w/Molotow chrome. The grilles were airbrushed, the rest simply done w/the 1 mm fine tip pen. The Molotow chrome is sealed w/Future clear which barely affects the reflectivity. I left off the headlight covers due to their being oversize and not having a good engineering solution to placing them, and I prefer the look without them. I may make some wire hood stays; none are provided and injection molded stays are too big and etched stays are too flat. Most likely I'll just pretend they don't exist on this quasi-phantom Ferrari. I love the styling of this particular TDF, glad to have been able to build the model and show it to Harold Bradford at the upcoming NNL East.

It's beautiful! I love the color and fine texture of the metallic.

Nicely done! I've had this one in my stash for a while, now I have some inspiration to finally build it. Any problems with the kit?

The dash fits inside the body; how well you trim around the edges will determine how well the dash will fit; I had to do some trimming of unseen parts of the dash to get it to fit flush. Nothing major, just a good bit of time-consuming work on many of the pieces. Considering this is such a simple curbside, it's not a big deal. All the time you'd spend on an intricate suspension/chassis/engine can all go towards the visible stuff on this. It was a fun build!

Beautiful subject, fantastic model. Regarding this perfect, mirror-like surface it is hard to believe that the subsurface is resin.
