Transmission slipping?

I have a 93 Probe GT ATX, I changed the transmission fluid/filter because it would rev up when I was going any speed, say 60mph it would act as if it slipped out of gear and go to 5,000 rpm. I thought that the fluid was maybe bad but the fluid is a nice reddish color with no brown tint and the bottom of the pan had minimal shavings and everything I could see of the internals looked very good and clean. Long story short I replaced the valve cover gaskets and did a tune up and now I'm trying to drive it again and I went about 4 miles then it "slipped" out of 4th(going 50 mph), I believe, then went back into gear so I turned around and was driving it home around 30 mph and it just acted as if I was in neutral and I had to baby it and parked it for a minute. I finally got home but couldn't get out of 2nd I would say and it just kept revving up like I wasn't in any gear if I got past 1st mostly. Any suggestions? I hope I gave a good enough description.

My check engine light codes are; 9, 16. 25, 28, 41, 69

Re: Transmission slipping?

My cars are Escorts, which had a predecessor to the Focus automatic transmission, and the probe could be very similar. Your symptoms could be something as serious as some broken parts floating around inside the transmission, or some metal shavings caught somewhere in the valve body layers, or even a bad solenoid controlling the fluid line pressure in the transmission.
But I would also be checking that its not a bad "range sensor". This is an electrical goody that lets the transmission control module (part of the PCM I believe) know what gear you want it to be in. The only gears you get via the hydraulics are first and reverse. ALL of the other gears involve solenoids being activated to do the shifts. If the range sensor is getting dirty or intermittent, the trans could be leaving one gear, but not going into another - due to the computer not knowing what it should be doing.

Commonly transmission shops will simply say the trasmission needs to be replaced. This is because its easy to say, but its hard to really do any repair to a transmission that is in a car. But try to have the range sensor checked, and while at it, make sure the lines running between the transmission and the trans fluid cooler in the radiator are not kinked shut. This could also cause your symptoms.

Re: Transmission slipping?

Thank you for the information. I ended up taking apart my transmission to the 3-4 clutch pack with a failed attempt to remove the planet gear. I replaced the brake band and am almost done putting everything back together with the exception of getting the pump back on. The very first thing I started all of this was replacing the transmission range sensor 3 times with everytime it still having same issue. I'm thinking the same now that its the valve body or the solenoid failing. It's been a wonderful car for the past 8 years but hopefully I can get it going and then I'm going to sell it. I did take it to a transmission shop and they laughed and told me it needs a me tranny, so I knew they didn't want to even diagnose it. How do I go about flushing the valve body?

Re: Transmission slipping?

Mechanics are likely to always say it needs a new (would actually be a rebuilt they bought) transmissions, since most mechanics have no clue as to what is inside any of them. Its the general response to any trans problem - and the mechanics depend on most customers accepting that the mechanics know more about it than the customer does.
The way to flush the valve body would be to change the oil and filter, and driver around the block. I dont think there is any way as good as that - with the exception of taking it out of the transmission and using a jig to flush it; a jig that even most transmission rebuilders would not have.

There are businesses that call themselves "transmission repair", but 99.9% of them only replace automatic transmissions with a rebuilt one they buy, or if its a manual transmission they just change the clutch and pressure plate. If a manual transmission needs anymore than that - they just buy a rebuilt one.

Re: Transmission slipping?

Here I am 5 months later....an update to this topic. I've reassembled everything and got my car going again. I ended up replacing the brake band and the valve spring that is in the pump itself of the outside (can't remember specific name). The car is pretty darn good now but recently it stopped going into 4th gear but sometimes it would. When I'm in the city getting into 3rd gear will just go to about 4500 to 5000 rpm because it doesn't want to shift. My next step is to start looking at the VSS sensor. When I read my odb codes I'm not getting a code for that sensor but it's well worth a try to see if that helps. I am getting 6 flashing OD lights when I do the GND & MEN (or TEN I can't remember which one) so I've seen a lot of people saying they get a "6" on their transmission light, and that's what I'm pursing.
