Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K

Hey just a heads up as i have 2 917's in the works as long time projects. Concerning the HRM motor kit, it includes some resin tube frame pieces for the rear engine bay so you may want to wait till you revieve your engine before hacking up to much of the kit parts. There are a few more mods to kit parts required as well. If you have ordered the engine i can scan you the instructions so you have an idea of what needs to be modded. The engine is very complete and greatly detailed. Ill be watching this thread.

Freakmech,

I have ordered the engine yeah, but that would be really useful to see the instructions, my email is seangrainger@btinternet.com thats a great heads up though and many thaks for that - very kind and helpful.
I have only removed the moulded frame on the floor of the front section and some of the cockpit so far so hopefully I havent spoilt anything.
Which versions are you building>

thanks again my friend

Man you work fast! Nice work with the paper clips, I'll be using styrene rod for the chassis tubes, but only in the nose as I'm not brave enough to open the doors like you have.

I'm pretty set with generic references I think thanks for offering, let me know if you need something.

Dan, my absolute pleasure. I have said many times that I have learnt so much in my time here at AF, if in posting these WIP's I can help anyone else out there along the way then great - thats why we do it I guess. At the end of the day its all about enjoying the hobby and I have never enjoyed it as much as I do so at the moment so long may it continue.

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K

Hi Sean

Nice choice. For sure any one of us has at least one of these babies in their stash. Nice start.
As for reference i also have a good deal of pictures taken at Goodwood but it seems you're pretty settled by now:-)
One hint as you mentioned the transkits you bought....
The Renaissance brake set with the drilled disks will be wrong for the car you want to depict. They came into use in 1971 first on the Martini cars ( at first only on the rear ) and later on the Gulf cars. If i remember correctly they didn't use them in LeMans that year either as Porsche hadn't mastered the problem of cracking disks around the holes then!
Keep the updates coming!

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K

a little further update...

the 'paperclip' space frame is complete. Taken me the best part of a day to get it right and oh I could have thrown the whole thing across the room several times - oh the joys of modeling!

Just to answer a quick question heres how I get the correct angle for each piece - I firstly laid them down over the moulded version on the base of the car, tacked them in place with a little blue tack and then pushed a large lump over the top. Gently taking this off keeps the two pieces in the right position and ready for solder. You can imagine how fiddly this got once I had all the pieces soldered and ready to solder together, phew - glad its done but well worth it in the end I think.

a couple more dry fitting tests to make sure everything sit right...

... and with the shell over it all - I have to say Im really impressed with this Fujimi kit - I was a little nervous about the quality of Fujimi before starting this but it really is first class. Only trouble is I now will have to pick up Fujimi's Gulf GT40 and also the beautiful Ferrari P330.

thanks for staying tuned, I cant wait for the engine to arrive!

Oh yes - this should be good to watch. Didn't see the resin rear cover on HLJ though - are you sure?? Is it the Rennaisance one? Media Mix Hobby don't have it list either

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K

Nice progress, I will get me one of these myself some day soon.
It's one of the all time high race cars, at least in my own universe.
Don't know if this link is of any use on the 917K, but there is a lot of pictures of other cars as well so maybe it'll come in handy another time.

Hi Sean,

Such a nice looking car to model. The fabrication work and scratchbuilding you are doing is certainly adding to the realism for me. I will be reading each and every update from now until completion.

Kind regards,
Bill

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K

a question open to all...

my research so far seems to indicate the underside centre section of the car to be white, this does seem a little strange - can anyone enlighten me?

cheers guys

Sorry, I can´t help you sorting this question out, but let me just drop a line saying that I really like your work. You´re investing a lot of time but - hey -it really pays off. I stay tuned..

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K

Hi Sean,

Very nice work on the frame!!
I also have the kit, but the Le Mans car. Not started yet, too intimidated!!
Here are a few photo's I took at a local race meet of David pipers car. I don't know how much good they will be for you, but I think the general detail won't be too far different. Notice the air vents in front of the front wheels, these not in the kit, and the ducting in the rear deck.

Hope it will help.
