Aoshima Mclaren F1GTR Longtail Gulf/Davidoff

I started this one a while back but have only just managed to upload the pics.

Aoshima Kit, Tabu Suzuka '97 Gulf decals, Studio 27 Carbon Decals and Aoshima's Photo Etch detail-up set.

I mixed my own Gulf blue using IPP lacquers along with their fluorescent orange, black, clear and blue pearl (over the gulf blue)

The Blue Pearl varies quite dramatically depending on the light.

I couldn't resist a mock up once the main colours were on and cleared.

Also ready to start applying the orange stripes and red "sprayed" side panels.

Next I started to add some of the sponsors decals.

I have also made a start on the Carbon decals. Most of them fit very well so far and I'm impressed with the variations in the surface finish too. many wont even require gloss, semi of matt overcoats to look correct.

Also a note on the Tabu decal sheet. Although it is advertised as being designed for the Aoshima kit some of the decals are a poor fit. The main orange stripe over the top has required lots of little extra pieces to be cut and added from offcuts to fill gaps, particularly around the naca duct on the engine cover. I have also ended up with quite a colour variation between the roof scoop and the rest, which is mostly my fault as I gave the scoop an orange base where as the remainder of the stripes were applie over the blue base. If I were to build another I would definitely paint the orange areas instead.
Similar story for the red side panels too, at least these get covered partially by the race numbers and Davidoff logo's though.

The top of the dash has been sprayed with a textured (suede) paint, I will also add a similar finish to the seat once I finish adding carbon to the back.

The only other addition so far is the new rear wing end plates made from plastic card.

This is pretty much where it stands at the moment, I hope to be able to spend a bit more time getting the decals finished this week end.

Regards, Dan.

Hi Dan,
very nice work so far.
I like your choice of colours, seem to "nail it" exactly (powder-blue, dashboard....)
Althought your pics don't do your excellent work justice. Try to improve your skills and make some tryouts with lights and check the settings of your camera because your miniature/ work deserves it!!!
Keep it up, coming along very nice, i'll follow with great interest.

Yours
jochen

Great work do you think the decals from the 1/24 GTR longtail Fujimi kit would fit the up-coming Aoshima kit of the 1997 lemans #44 GTR?
Cheers Mick

Re: Aoshima Mclaren F1GTR Longtail Gulf/Davidoff

Thanks for the nice comments guys.

Unfortunately I had a small disaster on this one last night. I decided I couldn't live with the colour variations in the orange stripe and attempted to replace it with Hasegawa Flouro foil. Long story short, I pulled some blue paint off the engine covers. I have since stripped them and will have to repaint them when the weather improves (middle of winter here in Australia right now).

Jochen: You are right about the poor quality photos. I had been lazy and have only been using my iphone, I will get out the photo box and proper camera once I make a bit more progress.

GTRfan01: I bought the IPP paint from Hobby Easy, Its pretty inexpensive and it managed to pass through Australian Customs without any dramas.... (the order contained approx. 20 glass bottles).
So far it seems to be a decent paint, its basically just standard automotive lacquer but in small, cheap quantities.
Heres a link : http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/category...l?t=1404623265

Mick : I really cant say if the Fujimi decals would fit, I suspect they wouldn't be a perfect fit but then again neither are the expensive TABU ones.

Regards, Dan

Bad news about having to repaint I have never heard of IPP paints what is your opinion of them?and they went through the post in Australia without any problems, just lucky or they can be posted.I have some Zero paints from Hiroboy which I got before the mail ban as for the cold weather were down in the -2C no good for spray painting.
