Uh, now what...

I am at a buddy's house trying to trouble shoot a problem. I have rather sketchy details about what happenned to cause the problem but needless to say he was installing an aftermarket stereo.

When I got involved the battery was dead. After charging the battery, there is a buzzing noise when it is reconnected and the car simply won't turn over. The only way to stop this buzzing noise is to turn on the headlights... Unfortunately, I asked what the buzzing noise (it is an idiot noise of some sort) actually was supposed to mean when the car was working properly and he is not sure. My guess is that there is some sort of current draw but I don't know where to begin. (After charging the battery, and reconnecting the battery, the current gets low very quickly and the positive terminal gets warm.)

I did pull apart the steering column. The mechanical side of the ignition switch is jacked up somehow as the key can actually be removed with the switch in the "on" position. I pulled off the electrical aspect of the switch to turn it with a screw driver and it is not helping (just trying to make sure that the cylinder is actually turning...). Just for giggles and grins I pulled that little rotating electrical switch apart and all looks good. Again, my big concern is why this thing is making that noise. It would seem to me that if I can chase that down, I might have an idea of where the current drain is.

I would really appreciate any assistance I can get. The Hanes manual is not exactly the most intuitive resource in the world...
