96 camry 4cyl 5fse intermittent starting/stalling
There's bits and pieces of discussion about this, but I can't follow it--so--new thread.
Cam (parked) was exposed to big electrical charge from nearby ball lightening one night. Car started, drove 40 feet and stalled out. Cell phone (turned on) was in car overnight and didn't work either (was in mode glitch). Car restarted 4 hours later with the check engine light on. The code P1300 pointed to computer and ignition parts. I drove it for a month and a half with the recurring starting/stalling problem (was taking care of other things on car). Every 2-4 days it would stall early in the morning. Might or might not crank over. Might start & drive a short distance several times and then not start the next time. Then would start a half hour, to many hours, later. Check engine light turned off 2-3 weeks after initial event; came back on with the next bad start. Code pointed to Ignition Coil. IT APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE ECU. HAVE TRIED DISTRIBUTOR (not needed), IGNITION CONTROL MODULE (not needed), CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (replacement needed). HAVE WTB POSTED IN CLASSIFIEDS. While driving the RPM indicator would be jumping erratically; when letting off the gas, the engine would kick and/or stall. Stalled while driving 45 mph--no power steering or shifting. Did this many times while in Reverse, backing out of parking spaces. Changed a faulty gas cap, the fuel filter; put 3 Lucas fuel injector cleaner treatments in 3 successive tanks of gas; cleaned some part(s) of the throttle. Had mobile mechanic do 2-hr diagnostic: (car was not running while he did this) battery, spark plugs, electrical connections inside engine & under dash; he swapped an ignition coil & ignition control module from another car; and many more things. He left it saying the car was not sparking consistently. Someone else who has a relative who has a Camry close in year to mine has suggested it could be that the electric distributor shorted from having an oil leak in it. His relative had exactly the same problems, took it to the dealership several times where they replaced all of the sensors but did not fix the problem until they replaced the distributor. This man says that the distributors' placement in the engine was flawed by design and prone to oil leaking into them through a seal. Mine was replaced 2 yrs ago. Is this true? Is it worth getting a used salvaged distributor online and trying it out? Money is an issue. The electrical problem is an issue for the mechanics. IT WAS THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AND ECU. THE $65 USED ECU FROM EBAY SELLER WORKED (5 DAYS NOW ANYWAY). Last edited by Maulana; 08-03-2016 at 08:13 PM. Reason: Problem re-identified; fix found |
