1997 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 z71
1997 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 z71 transmission problems. 5 months ago I had it serviced and A/B shift solenoids changed along with filter and fluid. Now check engine is back on with P1860 code truck also has started shifting more firmly into second and at 65mph it gives a hard jerk. Any suggestions will be welcomed because local transmission shop wants $1800.00 to rebuild that I dont have.

P1860 indicates a problem with the Torque Converter Clutch PWM Solenoid. Need to check wiring at the tranny & VCM. Most likely you'll need to replace this solenoid.

(777stickman) the wiring and vcm your talking about, is it located on the outside or inside the trans... ? |

I would replace the ignition switch first . many with this age vehicle have had odd type tranny problems .. even if it is not corrected this model . this mileage it should be replaced. contacts supplying power to transmission fail with the old switch... if you replaced the tranny fluid every 70-100K miles then the valve bodies and other parts must be worn which causes a loss in fluid pressures...then the harsh shifting ... |

Are you saying clean them or buy new ones?

Re: 1997 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 z71
I'm on a fixed income and have to save up for a rebuild, so my question is what repair can I have done until I come up with the money or it plainly needs a rebuild?

The VCM is the Vehicle Control Module located on the drivers fender well. Replacing the ignition switch would be a place to start. But with P1860 code, I would lean towards replacing that solenoid.

these have computer controlled valves the drive train codes and the pressure test will show whats broke ! I know you have no money because you would not be driving this and your willing spend for a 1800 tranny job on a vehicle this old with high miles. IMO drive it until it does not move then get another old truck. that way you will have time to save for another old vehicle. |
