Fujumi 1/24 scale Porsche 917K

Hi,
My name is Joel, and I'm a new member, but not a new modeler. Since the 1970s I've been a IPMS aircraft military modeler, just never got around to my passion for racing and race cars. This past January at the age of 70 I finally retired from work, and decided that the time has come to combine my interest in racing & modeling.

My 1st build is a personal favorite, the Porsche 917K. I wanted to do the Iconic Wyler Gulf car, but the I couldn't find a Fujimi kit online, as they were back ordered everywhere I looked, so I built the Martini winning car using Indy Cal decals.

For a 1st time effort, my concentration was on the gloss paint job, as that's the greatest difference to military modeling, and where I had the least experience and confidence.

The results were pretty good, but certainly much work is needed in that area of my car modeling.

Here's some pictures of my finished 917K.

Thanks to all for taking the time to stop by and checkout my 1st post.

Joel

Welcome to AF!

Great first build, cool subject.

The gloss paint job certainly sets car modeling apart from other genres. But once you learn it, you'll be amazed at how much better it will make you when building other subjects.

Very nice indeed. You couldn't have picked a much more iconic car for your first build. Welcome to the forum, look forward to seeing more!

Fantastically turned out 917K! I've gone the other way around with my building, branching out as an IPMS builder in aircraft after years of doing cars and the research levels and variety of finishing techniques have really helped me raise my game as an auto builder.

Welcome!
Looks awesome for the first build, but definitely will get better once you have a few under your belt.

Great looking build! I hope I can retire before 70 :/ I'll not be able to build at 70!

To add interest to your race car models, eschew the gloss look. Race cars (outside of the Porsche museum) aren't glossy. Use your military modelling skills to weather the car for a much more interesting, realistic look.

Welcome aboard!

Really not bad for a first car model.
Keep on building, and the results will come!

Ianc,
From my racing years (the 1970s), and from following racing on TV, pre-race, the cars always seem to be polished. After a race, that's usually the opposite.
