Either will work just fine. If you don't mind paying shipping costs check the Rock-auto.com web site they have a wide selection and the prices are reasonable.

Re: Catalytic converter 1997 GP GT

Thank you guys,

I'll get the Magnaflow since the only place where I found walker is WAY more expensive. The wanted nearly twice for the cat and installation. That's crazy!

Re: Catalytic converter 1997 GP GT

Hello everybody!

I want to give some update on this problem.

I haven't replaced the converter, and even when I'm planning to I don't think I'll be doing this in the next weeks or perhaps even months. I'll tell you why.

I used to think that all of the problems in the first post were because of the broken cat, even when I was nearly convinced of it I still wanted to make sure everything was alright in order to prevent damaging the new converter and being stuck with two bad ones without any chance to warranty it.

So... even when the regular maintenance items weren't worn enough (had less than 5k miles on them) I decided to install new ones (plugs, wires, new oil and filter) and while taking a look at the coolant I decided to flush the old one too.

This is where the good news came from, the installed T-stat wasn't the correct rating, I found out the guy who installed the new LIM/UIM gaskets used a 160F stat. Since I hadn't driven the car much since then, I didn't realized about the temp. I went to the dealer and got a new 195F thermostat, installed it, took the car for a drive and found out all of the original problems, except for the rattling noise, were fixed!.

I paid $23 for the new stat but that definitely beats buying a new cat converter!. I can live with the rattling for a while, some other things need to be fixed at home first.

Bottom line is... before getting an expensive cat, make sure you rule out everything else!

Thanks to everyone who answered to this thread.

Oscar.

Good advice! A little detective work can go a long way and save a bunch of money.

Yeah, tell me about it! LOL. I'm pretty sure my experience will help someone else.

Take care my friend and thanks again for your help!
