? about power steering and 4 wheel drive

Hi, I have a 2003 Xterra. I am having 2 problems, which seem to be related.
Power steering:
at slow speeds, and when car is cold, it is very hard to turn left. I have to crank really hard on the steering wheel. a dealership told me I am missing a pin or something? Ideas?

4x4:
when shifting back to 2h from 4h, the light on dash does not go off right away. often, I have to take a left turn before it releases. related to the steering prob above? aslo, I am having a heck of a time "finding" the dif between 2L, N, 4H and 4L. I seem to only have 2 choices, 2 or 4, and no idea if I am in H or L for either. the manual discusses the dif is pulling straight back, or down and back. it doesn't pull straight back?

help?????
