Heep's right. The factory authorized a few to be painted. I think they were 1982 and 1983 models, though. A handful of 1981 models were gold-plated and sold through the American Express catalog. And not a flux capacitor among them.

Heck, if somehow fate left a DeLorean on my driveway, I would most definately replicate the Doc's work. It would be my tribute to the '80's. Great Scott!

No one is quite sure if there are 3 or 4 gold plated D's. Most think three, but a fourth is rumoured. There is one of them for sale in my 1988 duPont Registry, around the east coast I think.

Another is located in a bank in Texas (I think it's Texas). The onwer of the bank bought it new, planning to make big money off of it because of it's sure-to-be-collectible properties. However, instead of selling, he's kept it inside the bank building on display. The car has 0 miles, the engine has never been started. It was rolled into the bank. There is a site somewhere about the gold D's...I'm too lazy to find it now, but it's an easy find with any search engine.

Over the last few weeks I've been seeing a DeLorean under a cover parked in the K-Mart Parking Lot. What do they sell for? I would guess around 20K, but I'm not sure.

Good guess! 20K is just about right, that's pretty well the average.

My Understanding is there is only 2 gold Deloreans

The bank in Texas has one and the National Auto Museum in Reno, Neveda has the other. Someone thought Delorean painted these, wrong. The two gold plated cars was for an American Express promotion. All other Deloreans are stainless steel silver. Personally, I don't like them painted. The stainless steel body is part of the history. It is also one of the major draw backs due to the weight and it is a pain clean.

Yes, they can be a pain to clean...the only car that you clean with kitchen sink cleaner!

I remember reading somewhere that turpentine gets marks off as well, again, the only car you'd dare use turpentine on

Delorean's are badass just as they are. My delorean is painted (previous owner had it done, and it was the only DMC for sale within 200miles) and I think that it looks cooler than with plain stainless steel. Don't get me wrong, I don't like the fact that I have a painted Delorean, but almost everyone I've met has said it looks better painted than stainless.

Check it out >here<

I went to a Honda parts place the other day, and noticed a Delorean parked on the street a little farther down. So, I pulled ahead to check it out. Then I looked around to see 9 Deloreans. Wow!!! Well, turns out there's a Delorean place two doors down from the Honda place. Good to know.

BTW, 1 of the 9 was red. :flash:

If you buy one these Deloreans you will be going to the parts warehouse all the time. Interesting looking cars, but not built to last. These Deloreans can be money pits. This is true of many unique cars.
