New purchase - Did I pay too much?
Well, after weeks of shopping online and at various dealers, I decided to purchase a 2005 Honda CRV LX, 2-wheel drive, automatic. It's brand new, and like most people, I hated the process of negotiating with the dealer. But this situation was a little different. The dealer was a friend of my father's who goes to the same church. My father has known him for several years. He feels that he is a staright-forward, honest guy who would not take advantage of me. I'm of the opinion that all car dealers are in it to make money (I don't have a problem with that by the way), and this guy has to pay his mortgage like anyone else. But I can't help thinking that his familiarity with my father didn't really play into it like I hoped. Here's how it broke down:
Invoice price: $18,658 MSRP: $20,195 My final cost (paid in full): $20,472.37 The dealer claims he was charging me invoice price plus taxes, tag, document fee, and delivery charge. I tried to get him down to $19,700, and he wouldn't budge. I then offered him a flat $20,000, and again he wouldn't budge. He also claimed he was only making a commision of $125. Does any of this sound reasonable? Or did I just give in too soon? Thanks! Craig |
